Né à Paris, Julien Samani se passionne très tôt pour la photographie. En 1995, il intègre l’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris où il apprend la pratique
du design graphique. En 1999, il obtient une bourse du ministère de la culture pour étudier à
la Cooper Union School of Design de New York. Il y rencontre la photographe Martine Barrat qui lui confie ses tirages en vue d’une exposition en Amérique du Sud. En parallèle il découvre la pratique du
cinéma et réalise ses premiers courts métrages dans les rues de Manhattan.
En 2000 il sort major en communication visuelle de sa promotion des Arts Décoratifs de Paris.
Après avoir travaillé successivement comme graphiste à L’Atelier de Création Graphique, chez Atalante puis avec LM Communiquer, il s’installe à son compte en 2003. Depuis, il partage sa vie professionnelle entre le design, la photo et le cinéma.
Son premier film La Peau Trouée, sorti en salle en 2004, obtient plusieurs prix dans des festivals internationaux. La même année, il reçoit le Prix Jean
Vigo pour son travail. Il réalise ensuite Sur La Piste, en 2005 puis Les
Hommes de la Forêt 21 en 2008.
En 2015, il tourne son premier long métrage de fiction Jeunesse, adapté de la nouvelle éponyme
de Joseph Conrad. Jeunesse fait sa première mondiale en compétition Internationale au festival
de Locarno et sort en septembre 2016 dans les salles françaises où il est salué
par la critique.
Il prépare actuellement son deuxième long métrage de fiction et développe en parrallèle un travail graphique ainsi qu’un travail photographique qu’il expose depuis août 2021.

Since then, he has divided his professional life between design, photography, and film. His first film, The Hole in the Skin, released in 2004, won several awards at international festivals. That same year, he received the Jean Vigo Prize for his work. He then directed On the Trail in 2005 and The Men of the Forest 21 in 2008. In 2015, he shot his first feature-length fiction film, Youth, adapted from the eponymous short story by Joseph Conrad. Youth had its world premiere in the International Competition at the Locarno Film Festival and was released in French theaters in September 2016, where it received critical acclaim.
He is currently working on his second feature-length fiction film and is also developing graphic and photographic work, which he has been exhibiting since August 2021.
